Republican Congressman Sends Holy Bible To Every Legislator

Rep. Steve Palazzo of Mississippi sent his favorite version of the Holy Bible to every Congressional and Senate office.

“On a daily basis, we contemplate policy decisions that impact America’s future. Our staffs provide us with policy memos, statistics, and recommendations that help us make informed decisions. However, I find that the best advice comes through meditating on God’s Word,” Palazzo wrote.

“Please find a copy of the Holy Bible to help guide you in your decision-making,” the congressman continued, saying the Bibles were donated by one of his constituents from South Mississippi named J.B. Atchison.

It’s be cool if they were to contemplate that whole Sermon on the Mount part.

Yes, this goes hand in hand with what Rafael Cruz proposed; voter registration in church lobbies.

      Except not in minority neighborhoods.

“Beginning in 1904 and continuing every other year until the 1950s, new members of Congress were given a copy of the Jefferson Bible, an edited version of the Bible by Thomas Jefferson that excluded what he felt were statements about the supernatural. Until the practice first stopped, copies were provided by the Government Printing Office. A private organization, the Libertarian Press, revived the practice in 1997.”

Dare I ask if there’s a point to be made?

      • Robert M. Snyder August 4th, 2014 at 19:38

I was merely providing what seemed like a relevant historical precedent for distributing bibles to members of Congress.

Since you asked, I will offer a conjecture:

I suspect that many modern Christians would be shocked to know that the author of the Declaration of Independence actually cut up a copy of the Holy Bible with a sharp knife and created an abridged version which omitted all accounts of supernatural events. And they would be appalled to know that this “heretical” version of the bible was printed by the government printing office and supplied to new members of Congress as recently as the 1950’s.

Don’t know what Robert’s point was but removing all the supernatural reduced the book substantially. By more than half, I think.

I have a paperback copy of the Jefferson Bible that I purchased from Amazon. It has 168 numbered pages which have wide margins. Jefferson called his book “The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth”. The title page also says “Extracted Textually from the Gospels together with a comparison of his doctrines with those of others. By THOMAS JEFFERSON.”

          • Roctuna August 4th, 2014 at 19:51

Way more than half! Just goes to show.

But when Rep. Keith Ellison D-MN decided to use a Koran for his private swearing-in ceremony, right wing heads exploded.

I have no problem with Rep. Palazzo engaging in what he apparently thinks is an act of good will, as long as he would have no problem with one of his colleagues sending him a Koran.

But when the Bible is accorded a special treatment not available to any other holy book, that is directly contrary to what this country is supposed to stand for.

Nope, they aren’t trying to turn America into a GOP Christian theocracy. There are absolutely no indications of that anywhere. Nope, nothing to see here. ~ A blind dude

    This is great!
I’m taking this to mean that I can now also send a Torah, a copy of Sanskrit Hindu scriptures, the Quran, the beautiful native American spiritual writings as well as my own Pastafarian writings of his/her sacred noodley appendages to them as well.

Unless you are one of those heretical Primavarian Pastafarians, because their teachings are evil in the sight of our FSM!

Oh, so you are one of those Chefbordians who turned their back one true sauce and refuse to acknowledge the transubstanciation of parma~! It’s cheese that turns to sauce you heratic! You can’t can’t explain that!

I like mine with a bit of basil too. My father used to use oregeno but I always thought that made it too strong and tasted too much like a pizza.

      • Roctuna August 4th, 2014 at 19:36

I wasn’t aware of factions in the Pastafarian population. When did this schism occur?

        • Eric Trommater August 4th, 2014 at 20:06

It began in 2007 when a spliter group of vegitarians attempted to corrupt the church and gain a PETA endorcement by denying that the eyes of our glorious FSM were not, in fact meat balls but some kind soy-kale-tofu crap or whatever those freaky heritics eat.

          • mea_mark August 4th, 2014 at 20:51

        • mea_mark August 4th, 2014 at 20:48

This is still top secret, but their is a very small segment that are rebelling and going with the oriental noodles, The dark green arrowroot noodles with buckwheat noodles perfectly accentuate the yin yang of the pasta universe.

          • Roctuna August 4th, 2014 at 21:01

Tofu eyes was bad enough but arrowroot or buckwheat noodles? No way. The FSM’s origins in meat, red sauce and pasta are inerringly defined in the Book of Sauce. May you be gently touched by his noodly appendage and guided back into the collander.

            • mea_mark August 4th, 2014 at 21:09

Never I Say, Never. I shall embrace my eclectic noodles and garnish them with seaweed and Sriracha sauce. Freedom of the mind and body begins with the freedom of expression of noodles and garnish in all it’s glorious diversity.

    • Larry Schmitt August 4th, 2014 at 19:08

Yes, as soon as a president doesn’t feel the necessity to invoke a god that most Americans have no relationship with (only 17% regularly go to church), in spite of what they tell pollsters. And I don’t see that happening any time soon. All candidates for office think they have to pander to religion. Maybe church goers vote more often.

      • Dwendt44 August 4th, 2014 at 19:34

Many do when the preacher demands you do it and only vote for ‘god’ approved Republicans.

And perhaps one of the “giftees” could send the congressman a copy of:
    “Necromicon”
    “The Satanic Verses”
    “Mein Kampf.”
    “The Tijuana Bible”
    “The Compleat Witch”
“When Will Jesus Bring The Pork Chops?”
    “The Joy Of Sex”
    “Catcher In The Rye”
    “Tropic Of Cancer/Tropic Of Capricorn”
Any other version of The Holy Bible (since this turkey decided to send the Traditional King James Version to his colleagues)!
