Pastor Robert Jeffress: Gay Marriages Are ‘Counterfeit’

Pastor Robert Jeffress of Dallas’s First Baptist Church appeared on radio with me Monday night, and callers brought up the issue of gay marriage. Jeffress referred to such relationships as “counterfeit.” He said gay marriage “devalues the institution of marriage.”

COLMES: “But how does it devalue the institution of marriage? Why would straights not get married?”
JEFFRESS: “Because if marriage is whatever you define it to be, why bother to get married at all? Anytime you counterfeit something, you cheapen the value of the real thing.”
COLMES: “Wait, gay marriage is counterfeit?”
JEFFRESS: “Yeah, it’s counterfeit.”
COLMES: “Really?”
JEFFRESS: “Absolutely”
COLMES: “That’s pretty insulting to gays who love the person and want the same rights. You’re calling their relationships, which are legal now in many states, counterfeit?”
JEFFRESS: “Yeah, it’s counterfeit according to God’s word, I do believe the Bible, I do believe in God, God’s the one who created marriage.”…
COLMES: “I think that calling it counterfeit is quite, it sounds cruel, so say that a marriage is counterfeit between two people that love each other.”
JEFFRESS: “It’s sounds politically incorrect. Five years ago it would have not sounded that way.”
COLMES: “Well, the world is changing. I would say for the better.”
JEFFRESS: “I would say for the worse, and I would agree with you that it’s changing.”

Jeffress is the one who indulged in grand style religious bigotry in 2012 by declaring Mitt Romney was definitely NOT a Christian and that a Mormon could not be a Christian. Jeffress believes as a Southern Baptist clergyman (big surprise there) he can authoritatively define Christianity. The real tragedy is Jeffress is one of the biggest and most important Southern Baptist pastors in the country and has huge influence in Texas (again, big surprise there.)
