Incredible: North Carolina Republican Mayor Marches 273 Miles To DC For Medicaid Expansion (Video)

Posted by | July 27, 2014 16:00 | Filed under: Politics Top Stories

Republican Mayor Adam O’Neal of Bellhaven, North Carolina, has been walking to Washington, DC in support of Medicaid expansion and health care for rural residents, Blue Virginia reports.

No, it’s not a trap.

Yesterday O’Neal arrived at an event on health care and Medicaid expansion at the Greater Prince William Community Health Center in Woodbridge, Virginia.

Included at the event: State Senator George Barker, Delegate Michael Futrell, Virginia New Majority, civil rights legend Bob Zellner, filmmakers Eric Byler and Annabel Park, and numerous others, according to Blue Virginia.

The Mayor said, “It’s immoral for a company to take health care away from people and keep your non-profit designation. We’re also walking to see a bill introduced that HHS has to sign off in order to close a critical-access hospital.”

“The Republicans in my state, many of them kind of support me in a way. They don’t fight with me at all. I think one of the major reasons is there’s no real argument against accepting Medicaid expansion. And I’m afraid that my Republican colleagues in NC are going to get killed this fall because of Medicaid expansion,” the Mayor argued.

“There’s 500,000 people in NC that could have insurance coverage the next 2 years and not cost the state a dime, and the state’s not accepting that,” he remarked.

“Now, if you’re representing the citizens, how can you not do that?…I don’t see how you can represent the citizens of NC and not accept that…So I think we got an issue where folks have dug their heels in on an issue that they need to rethink…and I don’t want to rub anybody’s face in anything because it’s an issue where all of us have to work together. It’s not a Republican or Democrat[ic] issue when this lady starts dying. Now, f you’re doing something that’s causing this lady to start doing, you gotta rethink what you’re doing,” he said.

O’Neal said the governor of North Carolina “won’t meet with us.”
Watch:

Mayor O’Neal is documenting his 273 mile journey to Washington DC on Twitter here.

Be sure to show him some love.

The Mayor is expected to arrive in D.C. today.

The only place where he is wrong is when he said, ” It’s not a Republican or Democrat[ic] issue when this lady starts dying.”….
It IS a republican issue to deny the woman life saving healthcare insurance, which is why the governor of his state won’t meet with him.

Another republican just realized his party has gone so far to the right that it’s now just bat shit crazy. At this point, anyone who uses the “both sides” shtick is a disingenuous shill.
Today we have one political party that is centrist, and we have another party that is completely off the rails insane.

You are referring, of course, the hacks, shills and lapdogs in the so-called media who spout the “both sides do it” meme.

What kind of HORRIBLE people would deny DYING people because they are trying to PUNISH Obama For OBAMACARE. If the people,ALL PEOPLE !! would just actually think about it, THEY would come to the RIGHT CONCLUSION ALSO. Its just so hard to believe that they are sooooo Gullible and ignorant that they can’t see what is right in front of their faces.. It really scares me that these people are going to vote against wht is in there best interest.. It is just unbelievable.. Ignorance and prejudice is destroying my country that I love..

I applaud Mayor Adam O’Neal’s efforts but the same people without health insurance WILL STILL vote for those who are denying opportunity to obtain it.

Want to take bets on how many of the 500,000 people in NC that could have insurance coverage will vote for the very same republicans who are refusing Medicaid expansion?

I say 300,000. But all the republicans have to do is say Obama, Obama, Obama, Obama, a few times and another 100,000 will vote republican.

Unfortunately, your hypothetical scenario is already playing out in another red state. Hard to avoid the conclusion that the success of the GOP depends on convincing ordinary Americans to vote to slit their own throats.

      Kynect is Obamacare in Kentucky.

In this poll, Obamacare is rated as 57% unfavorable to 33% favorable

Kynect is rated as favorable 29% to 22%.

Meanwhile, over a quarter of the voters have never even heard of Kynect which tells you about the effort, or lack thereof from red state politicians to promote anything from the President that people actually like when right wing lies are removed from the equation.

If NC electorate is so hateful of a black President named Obama to vote against their best interests, let them: they deserve what is coming to them.
