Brazile: Romney Mistook Me For Gwen Ifill

According to Donna Brazile, the Democratic strategist and CNN contributor, Mitt Romney mistook her for PBS journalist Gwen Ifill. That suggests the former presidential candidate could not tell the difference between the two black women who look nothing alike.

Politico reports:

In an interview with The New York Times, published Friday, Brazile said that when Romney first met her he introduced himself by saying, “Hi, Gwen.”

“Go back to 2012, and Mitt Romney showed up at the N.A.A.C.P. after he secured the nomination because he had to,” Brazile told the Times, before going on to describe their first encounter. “He came up to me and said, ‘Hi, Gwen,’… Poor thing. He didn’t know.”

Brazile and Ifill are both African-American, and two of the most prominent black females in the news media.

A spokesperson for Romney did not respond to a request for comment from the Times.

While recalling the incident, Brazile said, “Poor thing. He didn’t know.”

That’s what happens when a privileged white guy doesn’t have much exposure to “those” people.

They all look alike to Mitt. Poor people, I mean. What did you think I was talking about?

You are exactly right. It’s not so much that he’s racist – however he is dismissive of any and all that are not like him. Chances are he never really paid attention when meeting either of them.

The rich rarely notice ‘the help’.

You are correct. I don’t think it’s about color specifically, although I’m sure it makes it easier for them. Other race, color, and religions have no standing with this set either – it’s just a little tougher for them to determine at a glance. Its a class thing (not that they have any) and it’s no more acceptable than any bigoted behavior.

What if he’d said “Good evening, Ms Filbert” instead?
