Watch: A Professor’s Amazing Idea On Dealing With Open Carry Activists

Posted by | July 26, 2014 13:45 | Filed under: Politics Top Stories

A philosophy professor offers an amazing response to open carry activists who enter family-friendly establishments with guns strapped to their backs. He notes,”As many have pointed out, there is no way for bystanders to know whether the people with guns are “good guys” or “bad guys.” It is rational to be afraid of someone with a weapon, especially if you know nothing about them.”

That’s been my argument for awhile when gun activists claim there’s nothing to fear from an “inanimate object” but we don’t know the person whose hand is on the trigger. We do see their blatant disrespect for others though.

Jack Russell Weinstein, professor of philosophy and director of the Institute for Philosophy in Public Life at the University of North Dakota, came up with a solution as to how we should respond when witnessing these gun toting groups entering a store.

Weinstein writes:

My proposal is as follows: we should all leave. Immediately. Leave the food on the table in the restaurant. Leave the groceries in the cart, in the aisle. Stop talking or engaging in the exchange. Just leave, unceremoniously, and fast.

But here is the key part: don’t pay. Stopping to pay in the presence of a person with a gun means risking your and your loved ones’ lives; money shouldn’t trump this. It doesn’t matter if you ate the meal. It doesn’t matter if you’ve just received food from the deli counter that can’t be resold. It doesn’t matter if you just got a haircut. Leave. If the business loses money, so be it. They can make the activists pay.

Following this procedure has several advantages. First, it protects people. Second, it forces the businesses to really choose where their loyalties are. If the second amendment is as important as people claim, then people should be willing to pay for it. God knows, free speech is tremendously expensive.

Watch:

A YouTube commenter writes, “The best way to react is to thank them for supporting your rights and the Constitution. Advocating theft at restaurants is not a moral argument.”

We can thank our founding fathers, not gun carrying gangs, thank you very much. As for the allegation of “theft,” the professor covered that topic in the video.

There’s nothing to thank these two young men for after their group entered a Chipotle restaurant in Texas.

While activists have certain “rights” — which they have abused — nowhere on our favorite restaurant’s menu does it read, “Cheeseburger with a side of gangsta, yo.”

The legal defense of “necessity” will cover this. If you have to skip out on a check in order to protect yourself or others from armed strangers, the law in your state probably allows this.

    Brilliant idea.

  6. lraivala July 26th, 2014 at 14:00

Yup, Alan this most certainly would be your view of a logical action to take… Well, here is a response to your illogical action.. We law abiding gun carrying individuals keep on going to those stores in shifts to keep you liberal anti-gun wackos out and with any luck most of you will die off from starvation.

As for your other comment in regards to the inanimate object, this is true on any situation then. We should ban bars as well you know we do not know how someone will react to alcohol, especially someone we do not know, right? How about cars, lets through them into the mix as we certainly do not know the mental state of the person behind the wheel either, you know with them making those poor judgement calls to drink and drive. oh and by the way more people die in 1 year from alcohol related drunk driving than have died from gun deaths in the last 30 years.

No wonder you are falling in rating faster than a speeding bullet :-}, and will continue to as with ignorant retorts like that and hero’s like the professor (term used very loosely).. So please do stop supporting these businesses as I am sure as the sun is warm you will hurt other clowns like you more than you will hurt the people you are trying to.

2nd Amendment is here to stay no matter how hard you leftist clowns try and take that away. So fvck off clown

My hatred? I am just getting tired of the ignorance you lefty’s spew. It is getting tiring explaining to you dumb fvcks all the time that a gun does not kill anyone, no more so than a car kills people or a knife kills people. It is the person who kills. And every solution you bring to the table always attacks the gun and not the person(s). Try expanding mental health and you actually might make a dent in your false sense of utopia.

One good thing that has come about – we have finally found a way to get a conservative to advocate the “expansion of mental health”.

          • lraivala July 26th, 2014 at 14:14

Fvck you idiot… Name one conservative who does not advocate going after these mental wackos… Just one please. When you use a straw man argument you lose all credibility.

But now that you mentioned it, you will need to change the ACLU’s train of thought as they were the ones that changed how the mentally ill were treated.

          • lraivala July 26th, 2014 at 14:20

So do people with knives, rope, hands, golf clubs, baseball bats, blunt objects, feet, cars, trucks, go ahead dufus pick an item and tell me that someone has not been killed by one?

            • Linda1961 July 26th, 2014 at 14:21

Sigh, you miss the point. It isn’t OK to kill with any of those items, bu they do have other, primary uses; It’s just that a gun’s only use is to kill.

              • lraivala July 26th, 2014 at 14:25

So using your logic if an object has other uses it is okay to use it to kill? Well, guns have other uses also.

                  1. how does a gun protect you? Walls and shields can be used to protect, or even body armor, but unless you are blocking knife thrusts and bullets with your firearm, its not protection. Guns can be used to fire a projectile at a high rate of speed, to maim or kill. There tools with a singular purpose.
                  2. Hunting is killing see one above
                  3. By sport shooting i assume you mean targets, and clay pigeons and the like? The use of those activitys are to increase your accuracy with the weapon. A vehicles purpose is for transport but if you are negligent it can maim or kill.

                • James R. Olson July 29th, 2014 at 17:09

Why, your just repeating yourself. you just as well could say kill kill kill.

But, if they’ve banned you already, how is your boycott effective? They’ve already told you they don’t want your business.

            Logic am hard, innit, Cletus?

            • lraivala July 26th, 2014 at 14:18

Ahh, But simpleton’s like you think you can tell if someone is concealed carrying? Right dufus?

But to answer your single brain cell activity question, I banned them before they banned me. There food sucked dick. two pieces of cardboard together with a swipe of dog excrement is all they sell anyways, so one can see why you flock to that place.. Enjoy, have 2 of them.

      • lraivala July 26th, 2014 at 14:10

Seriously? No one has ever drove there car into a store front before? or how about down a boardwalk (California last year – 5 dead), hmmm, we should ban them thar there cars..

        • R.J. Carter July 26th, 2014 at 14:15

And the people in the cafe… fled.

          So…?

          • lraivala July 26th, 2014 at 14:22

And people fled in every shooting incident? What was your point again? The only difference in your stupid analogy… If I was in a situation and someone drove into the place at 60 mph I could not get away. If some one (you) entered the place I was at and started shooting (and unless you were very lucky) and shot everyone who was carrying you would not be able to empty your magazine. guaranteed.

            • R.J. Carter July 26th, 2014 at 14:37

My point is this: (typing. very. slowly.)

Car is not expected in store. Car does not belong in store. Car is suddenly in store. People leave.

Gun is not expected in store. Gun does not belong in store. Gun is suddenly in store. People leave.

              Am RJ’s Bizarro-speak clear?

              • lraivala July 26th, 2014 at 14:44

Here is my point, car is not allowed in store as the door way is to small, gun is allowed in store as it fits just fine and it is your personal protection from nut cases like you.

There did I type that slow enough for you?

What dystopian post-apocalyptic town do you live in? Is it so bad you can’t grab a burger without fearing for your life?

You certainly have the right not to make use of any business without a full on military guard, but thinking the absence of them makes perfectly fine for you to walk in with an AR-15 strapped to your back is misguided at best.
Or did you forget the part where “well regulated” is part of that 2nd Amendment?

                  • R.J. Carter July 26th, 2014 at 14:53

Obviously some kid had the magic ticket from “Last Action Hero” and went to see “Mad Max.”

            • Kick Frenzy July 26th, 2014 at 14:39

I’m not sure if you’re aware of this, but it’s 2014.
The Wild West was a couple hundred centuries ago.

        • Kick Frenzy July 26th, 2014 at 14:22

          Your analogy fails.
According to you, the logic would be “see, just like cars, guns can cause mayhem and loss of life, too”.
While I agree with that sentiment, I doubt you meant it that way.

          • lraivala July 26th, 2014 at 14:29

Ahhh, yes I did clown boy… Just as knives, rope, baseball bats, golf clubs, hands, feet, etc…

            • Kick Frenzy July 26th, 2014 at 14:33

              Hmm… you don’t get it yet… umm… stripey guy!
You’re argument supports not allowing guns in public buildings, not that there should be less regulation.
I’m pretty sure if you walked into a restaurant with a couple machetes strapped to your back, the other people there would be just as worried as when a group of people wander in with semi-auto rifles on their backs.

I’m assuming you weren’t on the debate team in high school?

              • lraivala July 26th, 2014 at 14:42

You can assume all you want, I know you never even finished high school.
But, to answer your (whatever you want to call it). I do believe a business has a right to not allow you to carry in there place as it is private property, but I as a consumer also have a right not to utilize a business unless they have armed security, and I do not mean one guy in his 80’s sitting somewhere in the back room of the business. I am saying 1 at the front door and one at the back door. then fine. If they do not I will not be left to chance for the criminal who will not follow your bogus laws to obey them and not come in and shoot the place up.

      • M D Reese July 26th, 2014 at 15:45

I just remembered a Firesign Theater bit about that–it’s called “Bob’s Brazerko Lounge”–“where your car is as welcome as you are!” It’s on “Dear Friends”…funny stuff.

    • Linda1961 July 26th, 2014 at 14:07

The only use for guns is to kill or to maim, but cars are used for transportation and alcoholic beverages are used for drinking. True, both can be abused, but used wisely, both can be useful.

      • mea_mark July 26th, 2014 at 14:39

    • LoriBelle July 26th, 2014 at 14:10

Why do you have to resort to name calling? Is it because you know that you’re doing is not acceptable in lawful society? Your “gun rights” do not trump people feeling safe as they go about their everyday activities. They just don’t.

    • banjonyc July 26th, 2014 at 14:12

Not surprised that you missed the point. As with a multitude of businesses that have banned bringing guns into their business because of theaactions of the open carry groups, the walk outs will also cause these businesses to realize they have to make a choice of allowing a few people with long guns into their establishment or keeping their larger base of customers. You see these groups are hurting their own cause. They already have the right to open carry in the states they are doing this in. By being so obnoxious about it they will lose the ability to discretely open carry in private business. If they truly feel they are safer by carrying then causing business to ban them actually endangers them. Be smart and carry as it was meant to. Small holstered arms and not gangs of gun toting people

      • M D Reese July 26th, 2014 at 15:34

What’s funny is that these open carry idiots are doing this in stores and businesses that they wouldn’t normally patronize. So when they march in to Walmart bristling with assault-style rifles and buy a bag of cookies, it’s probably a one-off purchase.

Why, your just repeating yourself. you just as well could say kill kill kill.

      • Budda July 26th, 2014 at 14:24

        That’s diversion. Stay on topic.

        • lraivala July 26th, 2014 at 14:26

What is the diversion. Try focusing as they are one and the same with a very big difference in the one you want to discuss and that it is “PROTECTED BY THE U.S. CONSTITUTION”. Amazing how of all the things I listed it is the only one that is protect, hmmm.

          • Budda July 26th, 2014 at 14:37

        “Guns don’t kill people”

  9. lraivala July 26th, 2014 at 14:03

I look at it this way, if they did walk out I would be the happiest person in the whole world, as then I could shop in peace with my fellow armed citizen’s without having some little-turd-stinking up the place.

    • Budda July 26th, 2014 at 14:07

You probably need the gun to back up your “tough” talk…

      • Mo Reno July 26th, 2014 at 14:09

He definitely needs an English primer, that’s for sure. Why am I not at all surprised that an ammosexual can’t distinguish between the plural and the possessive?

        • M D Reese July 26th, 2014 at 15:32

Most of them can’t even tell their weapon from their gun.

    • Carla Akins July 26th, 2014 at 14:10

Go back and edit your pending comments andI will post them. Otherwise, they will be deleted.

          I deleted them.

I am still deleting them. I hope he is having fun typing.

Little like playing whac-a-mole, isn’t it?

Iraivala, you tricksy trolly boy, you don’t fool me. You’re one of those gun-hating liberals just pretending to be an illiterate hillbilly hoplophool to make law-abiding, patriotic, honest, brave, thrifty, etc. gun owners look silly.

              Uh, aren’t you?

              • mea_mark July 26th, 2014 at 15:13

We got a good collection of deleted comments to pick through for the next deleted comments story though, so it wasn’t to bad.

I’m so glad you guys are on the job!

    • Linda1961 July 26th, 2014 at 14:10

What is it like to go through life so scared of everyone and everything that you have to carry a gun with you at all times?

  10. Anomaly 100 July 26th, 2014 at 14:03

As long as you’re picking up the tab, I’m happy.

    • Anomaly 100 July 26th, 2014 at 14:10

It would be better than fucking you.

    • Budda July 26th, 2014 at 14:17

“commie”?? You have no idea how stupid you sound.

      • Mo Reno July 26th, 2014 at 14:23

Self-awareness is not common in the ammosexual kingdom.

        • William July 26th, 2014 at 14:30

“Self-awareness is not common in the ammosexual kingdom”
          sometimes it is.

“I do not want your tofu crap> so go fvck yourself commie.”
        Ha,Ha,Ha…
Another faceless, nameless, anonymous internet tough guy who (from the safety of his keyboard) and gets his courage from a holster , quells his inadequacy with bad trolling, and silly paramilitary avatars has favored us with a snappy put-down.
Glad I saw it before it got dumped. (still laughing).

The original comments were already deleted when I got here, but the remaining replies are a hoot! I’m glad I stopped by. Iraivala must be a real pip.

We wanted to let you guys play with him before we banned him. You’re late! Grrr!

        • M D Reese July 27th, 2014 at 13:53

I’m several time zones behind. I was probably frittering my life away out in the garden or down walking on the beach. (Yes, I said beach–I have beach access.)

          • Anomaly 100 July 27th, 2014 at 13:55

Wait. You were walking along the gorgeous ocean instead of stomping all up in our trolls’ faces?

            • M D Reese July 27th, 2014 at 14:09

It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it. Those tide pools won’t watch themselves! It’s raining today, so I’m going to bake cookies and watch baseball.

  11. bob barker July 26th, 2014 at 14:05

open carry is fir pussys. any fool can open carry, but these weaklings can’t knuckle up. I’ll take your gun, break it in half then kick yer ass waldo.

  12. R.J. Carter July 26th, 2014 at 14:05

I can’t drive my car into Chipotle.

    • Anomaly 100 July 26th, 2014 at 14:06

      Boycott Chipotle!

            • Carla Akins July 26th, 2014 at 14:45

              You’re done here.

              • William July 26th, 2014 at 15:00

                • Carla Akins July 26th, 2014 at 15:01

I found his lack of comprehension as offensive as his opinion.

                  • Mike Butkus Jr. July 26th, 2014 at 15:22

Glad you got rid of him, now I can get back to work. LMAO! that was fun!

            • Kick Frenzy July 26th, 2014 at 14:50

    • M D Reese July 26th, 2014 at 15:45

I just remembered a Firesign Theater bit about that–it’s called “Bob’s Brazerko Lounge”–“where your car is as welcome as you are!” It’s on “Dear Friends”…funny stuff.

  13. Budda July 26th, 2014 at 14:07

  14. Linda1961 July 26th, 2014 at 14:07

The only use for guns is to kill or to maim, but cars are used for transportation and alcoholic beverages are used for drinking. True, both can be abused, but used wisely, both can be useful.

    • mea_mark July 26th, 2014 at 14:39

Yeah, and I am going to need a drink after dealing with this (pick your favorite expletive) person.

    • M D Reese July 26th, 2014 at 15:38

When a car is used as designed, it saves lives. When a gun is used as designed, it takes lives.

  15. R.J. Carter July 26th, 2014 at 14:09

Oh dear God, it’s become a troll pissing match from both sides.

  16. LoriBelle July 26th, 2014 at 14:10

Why do you have to resort to name calling? Is it because you know what you’re doing is not acceptable in lawful society? Your “gun rights” do not trump people feeling safe as they go about their everyday activities. They just don’t.

  19. banjonyc July 26th, 2014 at 14:12

  20. Carla Akins July 26th, 2014 at 14:15
