NRA: Let’s Make Schoolkids Shoot Guns

Posted by | July 23, 2014 22:13 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Top Stories

The NRA wants children to learn how to shoot guns. The NRA’s Billy Johnson does’t want gun-free zones; he wants “gun-required zones.” Says Johnson:

“Gun policy driven by our need for guns would insist that we introduce young people to guns early and that we’d give them the skills to use firearms safely. Just like we teach them reading and writing, necessary skills. We would teach shooting and firearm competency. It wouldn’t matter if a child’s parents weren’t good at it. We’d find them a mentor. It wouldn’t matter if they didn’t want to learn. We would make it necessary to advance to the next grade.”

Because firearm proficiency is invaluable when applying to colleges and seeking employment – as opposed to reading comprehension and math.

amen Carla. I have said it before. We are now in a global economy. The children of our competitors in India, Japan and China are learning chemistry, physics, math and engineering.

if some people in this country have their way, our kids will spend their days in school learning how to use 18th century weaponry and pursuing a history curriculum which includes a story about a talking snake in a magic garden

Agreed, yet both Alabama & Missippi have chosen to raid their educational budget to subsidize “economic interests” in their states. We simply cannot take one more step backward when it comes to our kid’s education.Education is always the answer.

I will repeat this until I am red in the face. The NRA exists for one reason only, to sell guns. They are a lobby for gun manufacturers and thus every word that comes out of their organization has one purpose, to find a way to sell more guns. They aren’t interested in education. They aren’t interested in safety. They are only interested in selling guns in an American market that is already over saturated. To be able to do that they have to get guns into the hands of people who traditionally won’t buy one.

I know this chart is getting old but homicide is 15th on causes of death in the US and suicide is 10th. Violent crime is at it’s lowest point since 1972 and all the crime stories are just scare tactics by the NRA to get people to buy more guns.

c’mon – if a university rejects your app, go blow the mofo dean away after waving your A certificate for shooting/killing in their face.

Fire arm safety and learning the proper way to shoot would go a long way in reducing accidental gun issues.
I personally teach and have taught my children (5) how to handle, shoot and manage their firearms. I also teach some of the neighborhood kids the same. If they learn to respect a gun then many of the problems will go away.
Knowing how to clear a stove piped round is just one of the fun things we pratice as well as shot placement and grouping.
It is lots of fun and the kids really enjoy the training and lessons.

There’s no such thing as a safe gun. They are machines that are inherently designed to kill.

I sincerely hope you don’t have to bury one or more of your children, due to the fact that they have been given a false sense of security around these lethal weapons.

A global warming denier AND an NRA patsy? If you aren’t on the Koch brother’s payroll you should be!

I think it’s a good idea. I was introduced to shooting at summer camp by a NRA certified instructor, I was 12 years old at the time. Of course that was a different era, a different mind-set. Today our society is much larger, more diverse and complex. According to gunpolicy.org, “The estimated total number of guns (both licit and illicit) held by civilians in the United States is 270,000,0001 to 310,000,0002,” that’s essentially one gun for every man, woman and child. While I don’t know how many gun owners have undergone even basic training with a fire arm, it’s probably a fair assumption to say many have little or no training at all.

    • fahvel July 24th, 2014 at 02:40

just curious – what do all theses licit and illicit deadly weapons, designed only to kill, provide for the society at large?

      • greenfloyd July 24th, 2014 at 03:04

Most people who own a gun would probably say a sense of security.

        • M A G July 24th, 2014 at 07:02

Until they’re shot with their own gun or think they’re stronger than they really are and pull that gun out when they shouldn’t. We see stories just like that here every day.

          • greenfloyd July 24th, 2014 at 07:39

So you agree additional training is a good idea?

            • M A G July 24th, 2014 at 08:41

If an adult feels they need additional training, I’m all for that and they can find that training outside of a school. They can take the risk of owning a gun on themselves.

I think forcing kids to handle weapons is wrong and will only lead to more accidents, not fewer.

              • greenfloyd July 24th, 2014 at 09:14

I agree about not forcing it on kids. However, it would be interesting to study those with training and those without it and correlate it to accidents involving guns within each group. I am guessing the group with training fairs better.

                • M A G July 24th, 2014 at 09:58

So, you’d be in favor of mandatory training for adults before they can purchase a firearm? Cool! Add on background checks for EVERY purchase, and you could be on to something there.

                  • greenfloyd July 24th, 2014 at 12:04

For guns, something like a driver’s license which requires both a written test and a driving test to qualify. Background checks are a no-brainer. I wrote this a couple years ago, Gun Purchase Challenge

                    • M A G July 24th, 2014 at 14:40

Your suggestions would be freaking awesome!

                • burqa July 24th, 2014 at 11:16

I agree with you both on forcing kids to take this training.
I would add that anyone needs to periodically review the things taught in good firearms safety classes.
Waywayway back when Nixon still infested the White House, I took an NRA firearms safety class in the 7th or 8th grade. I’d been shooting for years and out in the country it was common for kids to handle guns and it was extremely rare for accidents to occur.

It’s like sex education. We don’t want kids doing it, but if they do, they should be informed. Same with guns. If people are going to own them, they should be informed how to do so responsibly.
I’m with you, MAG on mandatory training and would add periodic re-testing, like we do with driver’s licenses.
