George Harrison Memorial Tree Overrun And Killed By…Beetles

In an ironic turn of events, the pine tree planted in 2004 in memory of George Harrison in Los Angeles will have to be replanted because the original tree died as a result of insect infestation — specifically, beetles.

The Los Angeles Times reports, “The memorial tree in Griffith Park had grown to more than 10 feet tall as of 2013, but LaBonge said the tree beetle onslaught was too much for the tree. Trees in Griffith Park have occasionally been the victims of bark beetles and ladybug beetles, among other tree-unfriendly creatures.”

The memorial tree had grown to more than 10 feet tall as of 2013, but Los Angeles Councilman Tom LaBonge said the tree beetle onslaught was too much for the tree. Occasionally trees in Griffith Park have been the victims of bark beetles and ladybug beetles.

A date has yet to be set for the replanting.

It’s OK. It just means George lives on in 1000s of beetles now. I think there’s some wonderful kismet there, personally.

Ironic yes, but why not plant a native tree instead of a tree that will be eaten by beetles. Short sighted and pretty stupid.

I agree Gindy – they should plant a native tree.
