Harry Reid: ‘The Border Is Secure’

Posted by | July 15, 2014 19:19 | Filed under: Politics Top Stories

It’s not securing the border that should be the focus, says the Senate Majority Leader, it’s getting the money needed to process the undocumented children coming into America.

“The border is secure,” he told reporters after the Senate Democrats’ weekly policy lunch. “[Sen.] Martin Heinrich [(D-N.M.)] talked to the caucus today. He’s a border state senator. He said he can say without any equivocation the border is secure.”
Reid said lawmakers need to worry less about border security and focus instead on President Obama’s $3.7 billion request to help process the tens of thousands of children from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador who have been apprehended on the border.

Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson warned Congress last week that Immigration and Customs Enforcement is due to run out of money by mid-August because of the large number of minors attempting to cross into Texas. He said Customs and Border Protection would run out of funding by mid-September.

He estimated that as many as 90,000 illegal minors would be apprehended by the end of September.

Reid on Tuesday downplayed the need for Congress to change the law to speed the deportations of minors on the Texas border.

“My personal belief — there is the law that has created some of the controversy now, there’s enough … leeway there [that] the executive branch of government doesn’t need new legislation,” he said referring to the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008.

Good luck, President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Reid, getting the money needed to process the undocumented children from this Congress.

          • Pistol-Packing July 15th, 2014 at 22:27

I have watched them crossing the river when the border patrol is not around. I hire truckers to transport fresh produce, and at least once a week, we have drivers pulled over who are transporting illegals. We even had one hiding under the scoop of the roof. Now that is right along the border. Go sit and the checkpoints 40 miles inland and watch what happens there.

My last visit a year ago, while BBQ on our friends ranch in Pharr, we had encountered a group that was coming through the property following the deer trails.

        • tiredoftea July 15th, 2014 at 22:38

Oh, good, year + old stories that cite the borders are more secure, even from anti-immigrant advocates.

          • Pistol-Packing July 15th, 2014 at 23:09

yes, they do, as one would expect from years of screaming and things actually getting done. but by no means are they secure.

Now whether or not you want to say that illegal immigration itself has been falling and many immigrants have in fact returned home since the economy crashed in 2008 equals more secure, that is objective. But even you cannot deny, that we still have major problems, and that we do not have a secure border, unless you are drinking the koolaid and is in total denial.

It takes two parties to solve this. One isn’t playing, other than politics.

              • Pistol-Packing July 15th, 2014 at 23:24

as I have mentioned in previous posts. The bill that is proposed would benefit me and my family in some of the immigration issues that we are currently facing.

But what is missing is the fact, that we have been promised for so many years, that we will secure our border. And now that we have an estimated 15-30 million Illegal immigrants that are currently here, now they want to pass comprehensive reform. As much as I want to see some things passed. I want our border secured. And that is where the problem lies. You say one party wont play ball, and the other party believes that the other ones wont secure the border as promised.

Admittedly, I am not a big fan of all or nothing reforms.

                • tiredoftea July 15th, 2014 at 23:27

Two different issues. There is no credible evidence of “15-30 million Illegal immigrants that are currently here”, although the numbers don’t actually matter in terms of making a sensible immigration policy.

                  • Pistol-Packing July 15th, 2014 at 23:33

I think there is plenty of evidence. but we can argue about that a different day. But just a quick story for you. My Uncle married a woman from the Phillipines when he was in the navy. They sponsored her brother to come over. It took 24 years before his number finally came up on the immigration list as being elligable. Once they received their visa’s, his wife and him sold everything they had, and showed up with a couple of suitcases with what they could carry. And that was doing it legally…

              • Pistol-Packing July 15th, 2014 at 23:30

in addition to the fact that we dont call it like it is. Since when is someone who entered here Illegally, now known as undocumented… For everything I have gone through with our immigration system with my wife. I find it insulting. We are still waiting for my Step Sons papers to be approved, so he is still stuck back home waiting for his approval. And when we wanted to get him a tourist visa to start bringing him here, to get adjusted. We were told, NO, you will have to wait. Even though as his sponsor an American Citizen, and his mother a Legal resident alien who did it legally. We get told no, it should not take more then another 15 months.

So yes, I have an a real problem with illegal immigration, when what I should do, is just save the money I am paying for attorneys and immigration fees, and just have him taken trough Mexico and cross the border…

                • tiredoftea July 15th, 2014 at 23:35

Well, if you want your step son to be under the cloud of entering this country illegally, go for it. Otherwise, your valid efforts at doing the right thing are very different from this discussion. And, BTW, I hope that you are successful in getting him here permanently.

This is a political football that won’t be solved until the right stops playing politics and proposes something in this area, as they promised.

                  • Pistol-Packing July 15th, 2014 at 23:47

no, we would not do that. But i think you can understand the frustration.

And thanks for the hope. We know it will happen, but it is a matter of waiting and going through the process.

here are a couple of news stories for you to sink your teeth into.

we already knew illegal entry was down when the recession hit in 2008, and we have made good strides in some area. But no matter how you look at the numbers. Apprehension of more then 250,000 per year, does not tell you how many you missed. and you cant say that the border is secure when you have that many crossing it who are caught.

You want to know how secure it is. Take a ride down to the border and see for yourself. I do business on the border in Texas and have been there many times. Besides what I have seen with my own eyes, the daily reports I get from business associates who have homes and warehouses there will tell you a much different story.

More half truths. You are definitely carrying the water for the liar in chief.

You missed this one from the liberal LA Times.

“Most people caught illegally crossing the southern border were simply bused back into Mexico in what officials called “voluntary returns,” but which critics derisively termed “catch and release.” Those removals, which during the “1990s reached more 1 million a year,” were not counted in Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s deportation statistics.

Now, the vast majority of border crossers who are apprehended get fingerprinted and formally deported. The change began during the George W. Bush administration and accelerated under Obama. The policy stemmed in part from a desire to ensure that people who had crossed into the country illegally would have formal charges on their records.

In the Obama years, all of the increase in deportations has involved people picked up within 100 miles of the border, most of whom have just recently crossed over. In 2013, almost two-thirds of deportations were in that category.

At the same time, the “administration largely ended immigration roundups at workplaces” and shifted investigators into targeting business owners who illegally hired foreign workers.

“If you are a run-of-the-mill immigrant here illegally, your odds of getting deported are close to zero — it’s just highly unlikely to happen,” John Sandweg, until recently the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said in an interview.”
