Iraq Tells UN: ‘Terrorists’ Have Seized Nuclear Materials

Insurgents in Iraq have seized nuclear materials used at a university for research, and the Iraqi government is appealing to the United Nations to “stave off the threat of their use by terrorists in Iraq or abroad.”

Nearly 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of uranium compounds were kept at Mosul University [pictured], Iraq’s U.N. Ambassador Mohamed Ali Alhakim told U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in the July 8 letter obtained by Reuters on Wednesday.

“Terrorist groups have seized control of nuclear material at the sites that came out of the control of the state,” Alhakim wrote, adding that such materials “can be used in manufacturing weapons of mass destruction.”

“These nuclear materials, despite the limited amounts mentioned, can enable terrorist groups, with the availability of the required expertise, to use it separate or in combination with other materials in its terrorist acts,” said Alhakim.

Un-enriched “uranium compounds” aren’t scary “Mmmmushroom Clouds!!!” that debunked Condi Rice promised, but our CIA never delivered any evidence of finding or being created by Iraq after the 1991 Gulf War & 1993 bombings destroyed all capability to create. http://www.foxnews.com/story/2004/10/07/report-no-iraq-wmds-made-after-1/

I think the warhawks are going to go nuts over this story. God, I’m already annoyed at what McCain is going to say. Lets hope logic prevails and people realize it is more Iraq pleading for foreign intervention than anything else.

Thanks Tom, but Fukushima’s 4 reactor meltdowns, plus one MoxFuel 15% Plutonium breeder reactor & Spent Fuel Pool explosions littered 100 kilometers+ with highly concentrated Plutonium, U235 & U238 for decades of cleanup leaving a wide-zone uninhabitable…

Anybody going near Fukushima, Japan today has more dirty bomb capability from dirt than these quickly degrading isotopes likely provide.

Depleted Uranium shell dirty bombs illegally fired by GWB / Cheney in Iraq 2003 to 2005, etc. left lots of US dirty bomb material in Iraqi dirt too: from 2004 up to this day, we are seeing a rate of congenital malformations in the city of Fallujah that has surpassed even that in the wake of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that nuclear bombs were dropped on at the end of World War II. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/craig-considine/us-depleted-uranium-as-ma_b_3812888.html

Also wanted to reinforce your point about Fukushima soil – it has no dirty bomb capability: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiation_effects_from_the_Fukushima_Daiichi_nuclear_disaster#Soil
“In common with almost all soils, the soil at the reactor site contains uranium, but the concentration of uranium and the isotope signature[153] suggests that the uranium is the normal, natural uranium in the soil.”

Thanks Tom, but Fukushima’s 4 reactor meltdowns, plus one MoxFuel 15% Plutonium breeder reactor & Spent Fuel Pool explosions littered a 100 kilometer+ radius with highly concentrated Plutonium, U235 & U238, cesium, etc for decades long initial cleanup, and while leaving a 100 KM wide no-go-zone uninhabitable for many more decades to come…

Great! Al-Maliki is still in power, so this must be total BS. Anything to get McCain and Graham from just frothing at the mouth, to being totally rabid for war. That butthead Shia ruler just wants us to keep him propped up.
