Grover Norquist: Call Them ‘The Washington Reagans’

Posted by | June 18, 2014 14:26 | Filed under: Politics Top Stories

Anti-tax activist Grover Norquist wants the Redskins to have a  new name, “The Washington Reagans”

This is a great idea,” Norquist told BuzzFeed when asked about chatter about the new name on social media. “The former Redskins can be the Ronald Reagans on winning years and the Nancy Reagans on losing years. Unless that gets us in more trouble elsewhere.”

“However, this should not distract from our ongoing efforts to trade DC statehood for (“Reagan”) naming Rights,” Norquist added, calling the notion “fun to consider,” if not necessarily serious.

Norquist started the Reagan Legacy Project in 1997 and is the founder of Americans for Tax Reform, the anti-tax advocacy group founded in 1985 at the request of Reagan.

    What a dumb name.

Does it matter?? In these politically correct times, someone will get offended by whatever name used.. I am waiting for the other shoe to drop and Peta or one of the humane societies to start protesting the usage of cats names in team names, ie Tigers, Lions, Panthers, Jaguars, Bobcats, Cougars etc etc etc.

so who decides what is “political correctness” and what is a legitimate affront?

as far as I am concerned, the most ridiculous display of political correctness was the hysteria over Janet Jackson’s breast at the Super Bowl. Aside from the fact that the “exposure” was one measly second, the female breast is about the first thing everyone of us sees when we come into this world.

you can dismiss other peoples’ values as “political correctness” if you so choose. just don’t complain when other people are equally dismissive of the values you hold dear.

I am suspect of this case given the age of the team, long long history.. Now all of a sudden… No one has a right to not be offended. Team name wasn’t offensive in their Super Bowl appearances. and it isn’t in place to purposely offend. I agree wiffya on the JJ breast brouhaha.

I am a lifelong Washington Redskins fan. I’m not sure how I feel about the name change, but I do know that if they were to change their names to the Reagans (not bloody likely), after I cleaned up the vomit on my floor, I would promptly start looking for another team to support.

    • arc99 June 18th, 2014 at 15:25

hey Max, I am also a Redskins fan dating back to the Norman Snead, Bobby Mitchell days.

I too am ambivalent on the name change but recognize that it is offensive to a lot of people. However I am damn sure that any team playing in a stadium that used $70million of taxpayer dollars for construction should not be named after anti-tax Ronald Reagan.

At what point are taxes too high for you? Arent you expected to live within your means, why cant the govt, unfunded wars and all? See you got me started on taxes.. Reminds me of the legislators who advocated taxing the crap out of cigarettes to fund one program or another, people quit smoking, revenue shrinks and is not replaced. Taxes might be a necessary evil, but fiscal responsibility is a necessary one FOR BOTH PARTIES.. Snyder will keep the name, just cant trademark it.. If someone wants to infringe on his mark, then the peecee crowd can have at em.

You could ask Republicans. They are the ones who ran up most of that debt. Don’t forget Reagan signed 11 tax increases including the largest tax increase in history.

So the Democrats didn’t do any of it at all?

    • Ross Cassell June 18th, 2014 at 19:44

But if they called themselves The Washington Clintons????? LOL
