We will continue to work with ViaFoura, which has been great to and for us, as we help them beta test new ideas, but we have just introduced Disqus with our posts, and hope you enjoy using it. Disqus is also a great company that is extremely user-friendly. You may already be familiar with it from other sites such as our friend, neighbor and soon-to-be partner,
FreakOutNation. Please comment here with your thoughts, ideas, and bank account numbers.

burqa May 7th, 2014 at 21:36
No, Mr. Tater, the trend for years here is to tangle things up more and more and employ tricks to falsely pump up those page-viewer stats.
Erasing old posts is not an “improvement.”
Eliminating the Recent Posts window is not an “improvement.”
Indeed, those of us who have been around recall when the Recent Post window needed to be enlarged, to make it possible to carry on more than one discussion and know what was being posted. But following more “improvements” that bogged things down, it got to where a half hour or more would go between posts. Anyone could see the numbers posting here dropping significantly as well as the number of posts being made by those who spend the most time at the site.
In spite of that, the newsletter opened with preposterous claims about usage that only served to undermine their credibility.
Alan May 7th, 2014 at 22:50
You’ve complained about Viafoura for years. We’ve moved to Disqus. All you’ve done is complain again since we implemented Disqus.
There is no absentee landlord here, and never has been.
Old posts are not erased. Recent posts still exists. Viewer stats are not falsely pumped up. No false claims have been made.
Since you are so unhappy here, Burqa, please go elsewhere where you can find a community more to your liking. I will never satisfy you.
Anomaly 100 May 7th, 2014 at 22:56
Just admit you were part of the attacks in Benghazi. That’s what we really want to know.
burqa May 7th, 2014 at 23:08

You said, above,
“We will continue to work with ViaFoura,”
Absentee landlord? Sure there has been. I have not seen you using the site, engaging in the various discussions and have not seen any awareness from you of the technical glitches that arose since Viafoura came aboard.
There have been a few times when bloggers have participated in the discussions, and, contrary to your claims, I pointed out that was a positive development. Also, when Viafoura was prompt in addressing issues, I praised them for that, too, here, and in emails to Ali.
The stats for page-views have been artificially pumped up as I described. For example, last fall a change took place here that added more clicks to using the board.
Had you been using your own site and posted with the rest of us on various topics, you would have seen for yourself the number of users in various threads dropping and the time between posts increasing. This is the sort of thing you missed by being absent.

Sure.
The fact is, I have repeatedly issued praise where praise was due. I did so here when Viafoura would correct their glitches. I also have copies of numerous emails to Viafoura where I creditied them with fixing things. Giving them credit and thanking them for it was the subject of several emails between me and Ali.
Alan is not telling you so, but whenever I complained to him (after being told to do so), I also complimented the ste and thanked him for it. But Alan is trying to paint a certain picture so he is leaving that part out. He’s too busy name-calling and making personal attacks, I guess.
I’ve posted having the edit feature is a positive development. Previously when the site got prettier, I said so.

Anomaly 100: “One quick question: Why are you here exactly if you find no redeeming qualities on this site?”
That’s you making stuff up.
The fact is, I have been here many years and have said, on numerous occasions, positive things about the site. As a new user I’ve never seen before, you missed all that.
Anomaly 100 May 7th, 2014 at 23:14
What I do see is you complaining about a comment system that is no longer here. So that’s pointless. Then you’re throwing out random accusations with nothing to back it up.
Where does this come from exactly?
“employ tricks to falsely pump up those page-viewer stats.”
That and other things you said aren’t very endearing. For the record, I’ve been visiting this site for years.
burqa May 8th, 2014 at 15:35
I was accused of doing nothing but complaining. One thing I complained about was the previous comment system. If I am going to be accused of complaining, it is only fair then, to look at some of those issues to determine if they were legitimate complaints.
You say you have been here for years. Very few people have put up more posts than I and I do not recall seeing you before.
When did you log on here?
But taking you at your word, if you have been here, you would have seen how changes made required more clicks to do the same thing. If you were here before Viafoura, you would have seen a board where you logged in and went instantly to the main page where all blog posts were listed and you could go directly to each one, with a menu to the side so you could go straight to any of the others with just one click.
Subsequent changes have been made that cause users to now go through more pages to do the same thing.
Had you been here like you claim, you would have noticed how rapidly posts appeared in the Recent Posts window and how that slowed to where it was common for there to be 30 or 40 or more minutes between posts.
Had you been here for years, as you claim, and had read my posts, you would have seen the positive posts on the subjects I listed, above.
If you care to say you really haven’t paid attention and therefore are in no place to characterize my posts, please do so.
The Lochnar May 8th, 2014 at 16:36

Nope. Never read your posts.
“Had you been here for years, as you claim, and had read my posts.”
burqa May 8th, 2014 at 19:57
If you haven’t read my posts then you can’t characterize them.
In the future I will keep an open mind about you because I think it is foolish to draw conclusions as quickly as you are doing. In my own life I have become friends with people I initially did not like so that experience has taught me to not make snap judgments about people.
I find it odd to imagine that if someone dislikes something on a website, but stays there for 7 or 8 years, that this then somehow leads to a conclusion that person finds no redeeming qualities on that site. To me, the act of remaining on the site would indicate the person liked it enough to stick around.
When I first read the OP it looked to me as if Viafoura was still going to be involved somehow. That has been clarified and I like the fact they are not. So far (and it’s a tiny sample size, but still) I see and welcome the improvement with Disqus. I also welcome the new moderators as it gives this place a chance to return to a site where discussions of issues were on a higher plane than so much of the rest of the internet because they are populated by so many clowns who just want to be smart alecks. I do not know if the new moderators have any intentions to take things in the direction I described but they deserve a fair shot, too, over time. I do not intend to make any snap judgments about any of them, either.
Anomaly 100 May 8th, 2014 at 20:32

BanditBasheert May 7th, 2014 at 23:21
Change is always difficult – we all know that. I am relatively new to this site but have been a contributor/mod on FoN for quite awhile – I would like to be a part of this site and have fun at the same time.
Have used disqus on lots of sites – although it isn’t perfect, we haven’t had a ton of problems and the disqus help does respond to issues.
We all came here excited to be part of this – not shake everyone up – and we aren’t the ones complaining and requesting changes. Blogs aren’t really personal property – you seem to feel it is your territory and you are going to let us know every minute that we are trespassing. I would hope that you would give it a chance. Because I also got a first impression that you are a major complainer that nothing makes happy. Show me different … give it a whirl!
burqa May 8th, 2014 at 15:19
You are correct that Disqus deserves a fair shot and not only am I prepared to give it one, I have added incentive to do so given the difficulties over the last several years.
I regret the impression you got over territory, that is not my feeling at all.
In terms of your first impression, yes, I have complained and nearly all of my complaints have been legitimate. I shall mention a couple in another post and let you decide.
I’ll be glad to show you different in terms of what I have posted about the format here:
* When Viafoura first arrived with the first of their technical glitches, I urged patience and praised positive aspects of what they brought to the table.
* When the Chat Room changed formats I liked, I praised it.
* When the Recent Posts window was introduced, I praised them for it.
* When they changed the log-in procedure so you didn’t have to have an account with Viafoura, I praised them for that.
* When Viafoura responded quickly to my complaints or questions, I praised them.
* When glitches were solved I praised them.
* When they added Epiphany as a moderator and she cleaned things up, I praised that.
* When aesthetic changes were made to make the site look better, I praised them.
* When bloggers like Dr. Dave Gonzo participated in the discussions, I praised them for doing so.
* When I’ve been wrong I’ve admitted it and when an apology was due I gave it, freely, often without prompting and graciously.
* This used to be a forum that was largely troll-free and I have long campaigned for a return to a more positive, productive form of interaction and discussion. There came a time about 7 years ago when it began to get bad and I was one of a small group who successfully worked to return the board to a more civil forum. Unfortunately it did not last but I continue to hold out hope we can return it to where it once was.
I’ll leave it to Alan to explain why he omitted reference to those positive posts.
Alan also fails to tell you that nearly all my complaints were legitimate.
Alan also fails to tell you my emails to him frequently had positive things to say about the response I got to my complaints, the way Liberaland was administered and my
appreciation for the site.
Alan also fails to tell you we are often in the Chat Room together where I don’t complain the way he says.
I swap stories, talk about things like sailing, gardening, travel or music and have pleasant, positive interaction with all but one person, whom I ignore. Hecan’t handle it, but that’s his problem, not mine.
Alan May 8th, 2014 at 22:49
Yes, Burqa has been praiseworthy at times. Let me note that. I responded yesterday as i did because he began complaining before the lights were even turned on, practically. And still went on about Viafoura, which is no longer our commenting system. So let’s all play nice now and move on.
burqa May 7th, 2014 at 21:36

Having the edit feature is an improvement, but they have a long way to go before they get up to what so many other sites offer. There’s still no private message feature and the Chat Room is substandard as well.
A lot of this is due to the class system in place where Alan and the other bloggers are just too good to engage with we, the Great Unwashed. I like Alan a lot, but it’s a case of an absentee landlord who doesn’t bother to use his own site and thus has never seen how the “upgrades” along the way made things worse and caused so many interesting people with a lot to say to leave the site for greener pastures.
Alan May 7th, 2014 at 22:50

I think Disqus allows you to login via FB, Twitter, or Disqus ID….it will just pick you up when it sees you. If you are logged onto a website on Disqus, you will come in through disqus when you click here. If you don’t logoff.

We’re trying to implement it too, but the Drupal platform is shooting craps with it.

Many online publications and blogs use Discus. One stop sign in. I like it. Is that you Epi?
Alan May 8th, 2014 at 07:16
I emailed Epi and asked her to register with Disqus so I could make her a Mod

Okay, I’ll retire. I’ve been killing too much time here and now this is my chance to kick it. If I look back, it’s like typing sort of ‘Webster’s Unabridged’ and now somebody dumps the whole thing into a black hole. Well, maybe life is like working constantly for that black hole, but I rather concentrate on jazz and play musical notes into that black hole.

Here I am. Alan let me know about the changes and he has to do whatever so I show up as a moderator. So far I like what I see.
The Lochnar May 7th, 2014 at 23:06
Wow – This is much better
BanditBasheert May 7th, 2014 at 23:06
Yay – a happy person!
Alan May 7th, 2014 at 23:09
why do you like it better?
AnthonyLook May 8th, 2014 at 02:14
My use of the Edit masks my frequent inability to speak like others humans.
The Lochnar May 8th, 2014 at 04:03
I didn’t see your question earlier. The new comments capability was a bit overwhelming at first.
I like thread structure and ability to have better links like Facebook where it shows a bit of content from the link.
I still have to use it a bit but the email notifications are working so I’m good now.

Well it does seem a lot faster and not so clunky. Just takes some getting used to.
The Lochnar May 8th, 2014 at 17:04
I like the ability to show a full version of link or uploaded content as opposed to a thumbnail.

burqa: It’s “hidden” in the paragraph above –
“You may already be familiar with it (disqus) from other sites such as our friend, neighbor and soon-to-be partner, FreakOutNation.”
Why would you click and post on this thread when you didn’t bother to even read the single paragraph that Alan posted which explained the change?

Hey, I like discus. Been here awhile. Good job Alan.

I always liked disqus, I still don’t understand why Josh Marshall dropped it over at TPM…Glad Alan added it, it’s much better.
