Tea Party SOTU Response Will Only Hurt Republicans

Its usual for the opposing party to give a response to the president’s yearly State of the Union Address. It’s not so usual for a faction of the opposing party to do so.

Sen. Mike Lee will deliver the tea party’s response to the president’s State of the Union Address, a major tea party group announced Tuesday.

The Utah Republican will speak immediately after the traditional Republican response to the State of the Union, which begins after President Barack Obama’s address, the Tea Party Express said…

Lee was a key figure in last year’s government shutdown, when along with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Lee advocated for a strategy on budget negotiations that would not pass a budget unless it defunded Obamacare. While the tactics drew criticism from Democrats and many mainstream Republicans, the pair became champions of the tea party movement.

Republicans shouldn’t be too happy about this, as it shows a divided party, not speaking with one voice. And the Tea Party Republicans tend to be extremists who can win local elections, but not national ones. This is not a good way for the party to image itself in preparation for 2016.
