Melissa Harris-Perry Shows Her Humanity, Even Though Apology Was Unnecessary

As I previously wrote, Melissa Harris-Perry did nothing wrong by showing a picture of the Romney family and calling Mitt’s black grandchild “gorgeous.” She can’t help what a panel member says, but the mocking that took place was of the Republican Party, not the child. Yes, panelist Pia Glenn sang “One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just isn’t the same” when the photo was first shown. But that is not a slap at the child, but a statement about very white family, led by a man who appealed to primarily white voters.  But even if you ascribe the worst motive to Glenn, that is not Harris-Perry’s fault.

Nevertheless, the words and the tone of Harris-Perry’s apology can be a watermark for anyone who needs to state remorse for an unintentional offense. Perry showed sincere regret for what happened on her show, and exhibited the kind of compassion I wish were present in more of us.
