Democrats Need To Own Obamacare And Fight For A More Progressive Plan

Democrats running away from Obamcare are only hurting their re-election chances. As Duncan Black notes, voters already have someone like that to vote for, and they’re called Republicans. Democrats own healthcare reform.  And a number of those who answer pollsters with objections to the Affordable Care Act object from the left. They want a more progressive health plan.  As Ryan Cooper explains why it’s wrong for Democrats to think they’re playing it safe by moving to the right on healthcare reform as “no amount of distancing themselves from the president or Obamacare will help. In fact, if they are to rescue their electoral fortunes, the answer is more liberal health-care reform, not less.”

Healthcare had to change, and it”s going to have to change again. The right has no new ideas for healthcare reform. For years we’ve heard about medical savings accounts, which are fine if you have money, but that does nothing to help the poor. And forever we’ve heard about how Republicans want to be able to sell insurance across state lines, but each state has its own arcane insurance laws, so good luck getting them all change. The idea that works in more civilized nations is single payer. It should be marketed as “Medicare for all,” and everyone would understand it. Hopefully,  it’s just a matter of time.
