Grow A Pair, Republicans

After proudly and loudly engineering a government shutdown and default scare — under the gut-Obamacare premise, but then under no premise at all — Republicans are butthurt over the drubbing they’ve taken in recent polls. The final damage toll to GOP brand equity has yet to be calculated, but it’s clearly substantial.

So the right-wing noisebox has approximately two options. The first: own up to the debacle the GOP caused for itself, try to spin it as patriotically as possible, sidestep the suffering it caused, and get back to business, counting on the rapid onset of electoral amnesia to cover its tracks.

But the second: just deny, wholesale, that the shutdown was a right-wing initiative. Blame it on someone else.

Blame it on Valerie Jarrett.

Not since conservatives hilariously attempted to pin the 2008 economic meltdown on the Community Reinvestment Act — a tactic so comically bankrupt that even the Wall Street Journal had to give it up, eventually — has the GOP advanced a falsehood so brazen, so effortlessly debunked, and so cowardly. But we’ll give it residual kudos for raw creativity, we suppose.

Grow a pair, Republicans. You’ll find them terribly useful — particularly, say, next November.
