Famed Civil Rights Attorney Vows To Fight For Voting Rights Protections

Fred Gray isn’t going to let the recent Supreme Court decision gutting the Voting Rights Act stop progress.

Gray represented Rosa Parks and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. during key moments in the civil rights movement and helped secure protection for marchers to walk from Selma, Ala., to Montgomery, Ala., in 1965 after they initially were beaten back.

Of the Supreme Court decision, Gray says:

“It is a license to deny people their constitutional rights. … It gives them a license to continue to discriminate against individuals.”

Gray said the ruling indicates the solution now rests with Congress, which passed the Voting Rights Act in 1965 and has renewed the act on several occasions.

“It is the right thing to do, and they should expeditiously make a determination following as best they can the Supreme Court’s decision to be sure that the constitutional rights are protected,” he said.
