President Obama told David Axelrod that he cried twice because of the Newtown massacre.

In a freewheeling discussion at the 92nd St. Y on Sunday night, Obama’s former campaign strategist confided that he received an email from Obama the day of the tragedy.

“He emailed when the news came in and said, ‘It’s the first time that I cried in the Oval Office,’” Axelrod recalled.

The President was informed of the news that day by John Brennan, his deputy national security adviser, who is now CIA director.

An official White House photo showed him bowing his head and closing his eyes.

He later cried during a statement in the White House briefing room on what he’s called “the worst day of my presidency.”
