4.5 Billion Year Old Meteorite Crashes Through Connecticut Roof
Experts at Yale University’s Peabody Museum confirmed Tuesday that a softball-size rock that hurtled through the roof of a Wolcott, Ct., home was indeed a meteorite that is likely 4.5 billion years old.
On Friday night about 10:30, Larry Beck was watching television in his living room when he suddenly heard a loud bang on his roof and noticed damage to his ceiling.
“Honey, I can see some daylight coming through the roof,” Beck said after he went to the attic the next morning to see if a rafter had given way.
“All the sheet rock had broken apart, and it was on the floor,” Beck told NBC Connecticut.
Upon closer inspection the next morning, Beck, who assumed a rafter in his attic had given way, found a softball-size rock and hole in the roof.
“As I’m crawling across, I say, ‘Honey, I can see some daylight coming through the roof,”’ Beck said.
Beck and his wife now wonder if their insurance will pay for damage to their roof and ceiling.
Though Beck first thought the rock could have been dropped from a passing plane, a friend persuaded him to have it examined at Yale.
