Massachusetts May Do Away With ‘Fat Letters’ That Inform Parents If Their Kids Are Overweight

Massachusetts lawmakers have proposed an amendment that would end the practice that began in 2010.

Since 2010, parents of public school children have received the infamous “fat letters” if their child’s body mass index (BMI), calculated by the school, is found to be in the overweight or obese range…

Now group of state representatives has proposed a reversal of the state’s “BMI Initiative,” adopted in 2009, by amending the law to state that “No language … shall authorize the Department of Public Health to collect data on height, weight, or calculate a student’s Body Mass Index.”
