Relief Dollars For Homeless Sandy Victims To Stop January 12

Homeless victims of Sandy may find themselves out in the cold at the coldest time of year.

Hotel money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for people left homeless by the Oct. 29 superstorm is set to run out Jan. 12 — just as winter takes hold.

FEMA has already extended the deadline twice for the estimated 2,200 families housed in hotels. But that was cold comfort to folks staying at the Super 8 in Park Slope because officials said storm victims shouldn’t count on another extension.

“Where am I going to go?” asked Ruebin Hernandez, a 53-year-old on disability who lost his Seagate apartment.

“If an extension isn’t made some people are going to freeze.”

… New Jersey has already received FEMA trailers to house homeless storm victims but Mayor Bloomberg turned down the units last month, saying New York didn’t need them.

FEMA spokesman Ed Conley urged victims to stay in touch with his agency — whether the motel vouchers run out or not.

“We are proactively working with each family to provide all the assistance we can,” Conley said, urging victims to call (800) 621-3362.
