The R&B artist, best known for “Rescue Me,” died of a heart attack in her native St.Louis.

Bass, born in St. Louis in June 1940, found her first professional success in the mid-60s with the hit “Don’t Mess Up A Good Thing” with Bobby McClure. She’s best known for the classic “Rescue Me,” which topped the R&B charts for a month and was in the top five of the pop charts.

She won a settlement against American Express and its advertising agency in 1993 for unfairly using “Rescue Me” in an ad for the credit card.
