Final Meal Served At New York’s Famous Stage Deli

It was part or the New York culture. You knew you made it when the Stage Deli named a sandwich after you.

The Stage debuted in 1937, when Russian immigrant Max Asnas served the restaurant’s first sandwiches at its original Broadway location.

The restaurant settled a few blocks north on Seventh Ave. near W. 54th St. in 1942, with Asnas soon playing host to celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, columnist Walter Winchell and comedians George Burns, Milton Berle and Jack Benny.

By the 1970s, Yankees stars Reggie Jackson and Thurman Munson were among the guests enjoying a nosh at the Stage.

Mayor Bloomberg, Muhammad Ali and Ben Stiller were also among the roster of A-list customers during better days.

The Stage also catered to plenty of out-of-towners: Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton enjoyed the towering corned beef and pastrami sandwiches.
