UN Gives Palestinians “State” Status

The Palestinian territories were recognized as a state by the United Nations General Assembly, a big victory for Mahmoud Abbas and his Fatah Party.

Despite objections from the U.S. and Israel, a majority of U.N. member states voted in favor of conferring nonmember observer state to the Palestinians, a similar status at the U.N. as the Vatican.

The vote passed handily, with 138 countries voting yes, nine voting no, and 41 abstaining.

The vote shifts the spotlight away from Hamas’s strategy of armed conflict with Israel to Fatah’s tactic of international diplomacy, championed for the past seven years by Mr. Abbas as the best path to statehood.
