The former DNC chair is assembling a campaign.

Robby Mook, the former top DCCC strategist, will head up McAuliffe’s operation, the official said. In addition to his record at the House committee — Democrats gained at least seven seats during his tenure — Mook managed New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen’s 2008 campaign and worked for Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign for president.

McAuliffe adviser Levar Stoney, a former executive director of the Democratic Party of Virginia, will be deputy campaign manager. Stoney has advised McAuliffe since 2010 and previously worked as the political director for the 2009 Creigh Deeds gubernatorial campaign.
