GOP “Mystery Senator” Blocks Veterans’ Cost Of Living Increase

Last week Congressional Republicans blocked a bill designed to create jobs for veterans.  This week, an unnamed GOP senator blocked their Cost Of Living Adjustment (COLA) as well.

HR 4114 would give veterans a small 1.9% increase in their benefits.  The bill passed the House in July 2012 and is considered a non-controversial piece of legislation – until today.  House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller, R-Fla., said the House version passed early so that veterans wouldn’t have to worry whether their meager cost of living increase would be detained in a political tug-of-war.  Apparently someone in the Senate missed that memo.

The anonymous senator has not come forward to claim “victory” for holding veterans’ COLA legislation hostage.  Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash), Chairman of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, indicated that this action will hold up benefits for 3.9 million veterans and their survivors.  She is asking for the senator to come forward so that opposition to the bill’s passage can be worked out.
