Colorado Attempts to Purge U.S. Citizens From Voter Registration

Under the guise of combating “voter fraud,” Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler (R) targeted 4,000 registered voters or, as he called them, “suspected non-citizens,” with a letter demanding proof of citizenship. Gessler determined those who had applied for drivers licenses using non-citizen documents (even though it is entirely legal to do so) would be purged from the voter rolls if they could not provide proof of citizenship.

Apparently, a simple check with federal databases could have cleared up many of Gessler’s questions and saved taxpayers a substantial sum of money: only 168 people remain to be verified as citizens.  Gessler’s office admits that many, most, or all of them could be U.S. citizens.

Claiming his challenge wasn’t politically motivated, 40% of Gessler’s letters were sent to Democrats and 13% to Republicans.  In the past, Gessler has tried to purge the voter rolls, going so far as to target military troops deployed overseas.
