TheGrio.com reports that President Obama may be the descendent of one of the first Africans brought to America in the early 1600’s.  New research shows that the connection is through his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham.

Ancestry.com discovered that John Punch, the first African enslaved for life, is most likely the 11th great-grandfather of President Obama. Punch was an indentured servant who fled before his term of indenture was complete; a judge ordered him to serve the rest of his life as an indentured servant, effectively making him a slave even before slavery was legal.  Punch is believed to have fathered children with a white woman sometime in the 1640’s.

The family tree diverged over time into two main branches from that union; both branches received “free” status from their white mother.  Today, President Obama’s distant cousins continue to unravel their mixed-race heritage.
