Police and angry citizens in Anaheim, California clashed in the street after police shot and killed a man who fled on foot following their attempts to “contact” him.  The Orange County Register indicates that shortly after Manuel Diaz was chased down by police in the vicinity of the 700 block of North Anna, neighbors and witnesses approached the officers demanding to know why a second fatal shot was fired.  Witnesses state that Diaz had been hit by one shot and was face down on the ground.  Police have not indicated whether Diaz was armed or wanted for any reason other than standing by a truck with two other individuals.

KTLA reports that officers returned to the scene to confront residents who continued to protest hours after investigators left the premises.  As the scene grew more tense, police fired rubber bullets and pepper balls into the crowd of men, women, children and babies in strollers.  A K-9 officer lost control of his dog which charged into the crowd.  Police assert the release of the dog was an accident and acknowledge there are a number of undetermined injuries as a result of that breach of safety.

The blog Orchestrated Pulse (strong language) gives further details of the tension that preceded this incident, the latest in a number of controversial police shootings in Anaheim.
