Before dawn, preparations were made to remove the statue of once-revered Joe Paterno from its place of prominence in front of Beaver Stadium on the Penn State campus at State College.  ESPN reports that police, fencing, and a blanket over the statue prevented onlookers from viewing the removal of the 900-pound bronze tribute.  It was removed by forklift and will be stored in “an undisclosed location” until further notice.

Penn State president Rodney Erickson said “I now believe that, contrary to its original intention, Coach Paterno’s statue has become a source of division and an obstacle to healing in our university and beyond”.  This is in the wake of the growing child sexual abuse scandal at Penn State following the conviction of former assistant Jerry Sandusky.
