Thaddeus McCotter Suddenly Resigns From Congress After “Nightmarish” Times

Michigan Congressman Thad McCotter has suddenly quit.

It comes a day after the Detroit News published a story about a script he wrote for a TV comedy in the wake of a failed bid for the Republican presidential nomination and weeks after his reelection campaign foundered after it was discovered he had submitted pages of invalid signatures supporting his candidacy.

After learning of the invalid signatures, McCotter – a former state legislator – asked to have his name removed from the ballot for the Aug. 6 Republican primary. Shortly thereafter, he abandoned what would have been a difficult attempt to win a write-in campaign, announcing that he would leave Congress. In the meantime, he said, he would work with investigators to determine how the signatures – many of which had been copied from previous years – had been gathered.

In a statement Friday, McCotter said, “this past nightmarish month and a half have, for the first time, severed the necessary harmony between the needs of my constituency and of my family. As this harmony is required to serve, its absence requires I leave.”
