Store clerk Jackie Whiton doesn’t like that a man on government assistance wanted to purchase cigarettes.

There was a “gentleman behind him and the woman behind him, I mentioned the young man,” Whiton continued. “I said, ‘Do you think the three of us as taxpayers should be paying for your cigarettes?’ and (the young man) thought we should.”

The spurned customer left, but his foster mother returned the next day to complain, Whiton said. Again, she declined to accept the family’s EBT cash card as payment, she said.

The next day, the store’s owner, C.N. Brown, canned her after six years.

Whiton is now an activist.

The 65-year-old said she’s started a campaign to change how certain electronic benefit transfer, or EBT, cards can be used.

“The support of this has been overwhelming to me, and I will be sending a petition to the governmet to dissolve these cash cards,” Whiton, of Antrim, told Fox News on Wednesday.
