After SCOTUS Strikes Down Most Of Arizona’s Immigration Law, Gov. Jan Brewer Declares Victory

If having a law you support largely struck down by the Supreme Court, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer had a pretty good day.

“Today’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court is a victory for the rule of law. It is also a victory for the 10th Amendment and all Americans who believe in the inherent right and responsibility of states to defend their citizens,” the Republican governor said in a statement. “After more than two years of legal challenges, the heart of SB 1070 can now be implemented in accordance with the U.S. Constitution.”

The fact is the court struck down key parts of the law, and left another part in a rather tenuous position.

The court upheld the “show me your papers” requirement that police check suspects’ immigration status. Even there, though, the justices said the provision could be subject to additional legal challenges, and they removed some teeth by prohibiting officers from arresting people on immigration charges.
