Alabama Senator Rewriting Abortion Law To Allow Women To Choose Ultrasound Method

State Senator Clay Scofield is rewriting his abortion bill so that women aren’t forced to have an invasive wand, although they would still be required to have an ultrasounds if they want abortions.

The bill, as introduced and as approved by the Senate Health Committee last week, says a doctor or technician performing a required ultrasound would have to use either a transducer moved over the woman’s abdomen or a transducer inserted into her vagina, ”whichever would display the embryo or fetus more clearly.”

The committee-approved bill would not let the woman choose what type wand was used.

Scofield in an interview said that was not his intent, and that he planned to rewrite the bill so that the woman could decide whether to have an abdominal or vaginal transducer, or wand, used on her.
