Liberaland Hero Of The Day: Diane Carlton

Robert Hartford was freezing in his Dixfield, Maine home, and needed more oil he couldn’t afford. Ike Libby, co-owner of Hometown Energy had already helped Mr. Hartford out a couple of times and there was a $700 unpaid tab.  This time Mr. Libby, trying to balance the needs of his customers with the need to stay in business, had to say no. In desperation, Mr. Hartford showed up at the office of Hometown Energy and offered to give them the deed to his car. Janis Carlton, who handles accounts there, remembered an offer from someone to donate 50 gallons of heating oil should there be an emergency. That person is Diane Carlton, Janis’ mother-in-law, who also works at Hometown Energy. Without hesitation, the elder Ms. Carlton told her daughter-in-law to deliver the oil and she’d pay for it. While we have presidential candidates arguing about off-shore accounts and who has what in blind trusts, it’s important to be reminded about what really matters, and about Americans like Diane Carlton who made a difference in the lives of two needy neighbors.
