By a mostly party-line vote of 51-49 the Senate defeated the Democratic attempt to extend the payroll tax cut. Sixty votes were needed for passage.

Under current law, the payroll tax cut for workers is scheduled to expire on December 31. Senate leaders are trying to find a compromise bill that would pass before the end of the year.

A Republican plan to extend the payroll tax cut and pay for it with a 10% cut in the federal work force was defeated 78-20.
