Republican Candidates Vying For Endorsement Of Sheriff Fined $200,000 For Detaining Two Men For Being Hispanic
On Feb. 11, 2009, Arpaio’s deputies raided a landscaping company in search of identity-theft and fraud suspects and proceeded to stop Julian and Julio Mora’s pickup truck outside the business. A federal judge determined “the deputies had no reason to stop the men or detain them for nearly three hours.” The ACLU of Arizona said the settlement “should send a message to police agencies that engage in discriminatory practices.”
