Bill Clinton Now Supports Gay Marriage

I certainly have my many issues with Bill Clinton as a president. One of them in particular was signing the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) into law back in September 1996, which defined marriage at the federal level as being a legal union between one man and one woman. DOMA also allows for states like Texas to refuse to recognize gay marriages certified in states like Massachusetts.

But now, nearly fifteen years later, Clinton released a statement officially changing his position on the issue, in which he said:

Our nation’s permanent mission is to form a ‘more perfect union’ – deepening the meaning of freedom, broadening the reach of opportunity, strengthening the bonds of community. That mission has inspired and empowered us to extend rights to people previously denied them. Every time we have done that, it has strengthened our nation. Now we should do it again, in New York, with marriage equality. For more than a century, our Statue of Liberty has welcomed all kinds of people from all over the world yearning to be free. In the 21st century, I believe New York’s welcome must include marriage equality.

While it would have been nice if Bubba had taken this stance while he was actually in office, it is never too late to do the right thing.
