With 3 Vetoes, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer Breaks From Her Far Right-Wing Supporters

I don’t imagine too many people saw these events coming. Having previously shilled for far right-wing Tea Party-ers in order to hold on to her appointed position, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer broke decisively with those supporters on Monday. With three consecutive vetoes of their extremist bills, she probably dealt fatal blows to all of them.

‘Birther bill’

HB 2177, the “birther” bill, “creates significant new problems while failing to do anything constructive for Arizona,” Brewer said . .

“In addition, I never imagined being presented with a bill that could require candidates for President of the greatest and most powerful nation on earth to submit their “early baptismal or circumcision certificates” among other records to the Arizona Secretary of State. This is a bridge too far,” Brewer wrote . .

Guns at school

SB 1467 was vetoed “because it is so poorly written,” Brewer said.

“Bills impacting our Second Amendment rights have to be crystal clear so that gun owners don’t become lawbreakers by accident,” she wrote in her veto message to Senate President Russell Pearce . .

While the bill was “widely advertised” as applying to colleges and universities, it expressly superseded a law that allows school districts to enforce prohibitions against weapons on school grounds, she wrote.

She also vetoed a health-care bill meant to challenge President Obama’s Affordable Care Act.

It will be interesting to see the reactions among her hard conservative base. Senate President Russell Pearce’s reaction could be particularly nasty. The most notorious Tea Party-type politician in Arizona, Pearce is not known for cool-headed responses and rational thought.

Last month, he addressed a group of conservative faithful and told them, “Do you know, you’re not a citizen of the United States? You’re a citizen of a sovereign state.” Back in 2006, he e-mailed some clippings from the website of white supremacists The National Alliance to supporters. He also previously endorsed the city council campaign of neo-nazi J.T. Ready, pictured here.

Pearce will not be pleased. House Speaker Kirk Adams noted that a governor’s veto had not been overridden in fifty years.
