House Majority Leader Eric Cantor Would Eliminate Social Security, The Constitution And The U.S. Senate

Representative ERIC CANTOR (Republican, Virginia; House Majority Leader): Harry Reid has said that Social Security does not have a problem. That would be reflecting what the illness is in Washington, and we’re not backing down . .

I mean, just from the very notion that it said that 50 percent of beneficiaries under the Social Security program use those moneys as their sole source of income. So we’ve got to protect today’s seniors. But for the rest of us? For – you know, listen. We’re going to have to come to grips with the fact that these programs cannot exist if we want America to be what we want America to be.

So, Cantor would kill our 75 year-old Old Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance program. That’s one way to change the nation. How many Americans, do you figure, depend upon their monthly checks to stay out of poverty? One study said it was 20 million. After Republicans dump all those people onto our streets, once the retirees and the disabled accept fishing through our trash bins for lunches, Eric and his buddies will have gotten “America to be what we want America to be.”

And just what would Cantor do with the decades worth of money I’ve contributed, at 6.2% of my income, to the Social Security fund? Perhaps he’d buy a bunch of attack jets and bomb Tehran? If you ask me, the source of the money, I’d prefer it go to the old folks, widows and orphans.

Any other good ideas you got there, Eric? A “Government Shutdown Prevention Act”? I’m almost afraid to ask . . .

“What this bill says is it reiterates again the deadline, and that the Senate should act before the deadline, and that’s what the American people are expecting,” House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said Wednesday morning at a news conference with other House Republican leaders. “The bill then says if the Senate does not act, then H.R. 1 [the House-passed bill that cuts $61 billion] will be the law of the land.”

Well, if you can’t reiterate something at first, at least do it again.

You wrote a bill that colors the Senate invisible? Renders the Constitution powerless? Good job, Mr. Majority Leader. I’m sure that’s exactly the sort of leadership Americans were looking for. They wanted someone to make null and void one of the houses of Congress and our founding document.

Lawrence O’Donnell, among perhaps millions of others, was not impressed:

“The luckiest man in the United States House of Representatives now is Eric Cantor, lucky that rank stupidity is not an expellable offense . . Every day that Eric Cantor lets pass without an apology to his constituents, to the congress, to the President, and to every high school student in America who knows more about government than he does, Eric Cantor stands as an unpardonable embarrassment to every adult in his congressional district who voted for him, and a stain on the intelligence of every Republican House member who voted for him for leader.”
