Michele Bachmann Would Punish Single Mothers By Giving Tax Breaks For “Family Formation”

Speaking in Iowa, Minnesota Congresswoman and 2012 presidential tease Michele Bachmann promoted a tax code to encourage “family formation” that would have the effect of punishing single mothers by giving tax breaks to those who are married.

Bachmann proposes implementing a tax system that would encourage “family formation.” The context of Bachmann’s remarks make it clear that she would like to either give tax credits, or lower tax rates to people who are married as opposed to those who are single. Given Bachmann’s past statement on gay rights, the lower tax rates and/or tax credits would also only apply to heterosexual couples. If implemented, single mothers would likely be taxed at a higher rate than mothers who are married.

Bachmann’s proposal stands in stark contrast to the small government tone of the rest of her speech. Just minutes later in the speech Bachmann states that she would scrap the current tax code because it is too complicated. Then Bachmann would presumably implement a system in which the government tried to encourage “family formation” through the tax code. Rather than encouraging people to buy homes (as the current tax code does), Bachmann would like to encourage people to get married through the tax code.

Given that single mothers usually don’t have the luxury of a second income, this would be an additional burden for those who have to bear the financial brunt of childcare and home living expenses.

It`s a complicated issue, but this proposal goes a long way toward discouraging single women from giving birth to 10 or 12 children so they can live off welfare. There are hundreds of single women who do this.

and there are millions who don’t. there are millions who are single mothers not at their own choosing. how about mother’s who are divorced, or mother’s who are single because the father left or because the father is in prison or because the father died? so, punish all? that’s sick. and 10 – 12 is b.s.

I agree with you; there are millions who are single not because they want to, and they should not be punished. We need some kind of law that would distinguish between the two.

Also 10 to 12 is not B.S. When I was working for the city directory, I came across some with even more children than that.
