Here is a handy guide to what shutting down the government, something some Republicans think could be a good idea, would accomplish:

• Many veterans services would be cut.

• National parks and museums would shut and lose revenue.

• No passports would be issued.

• New Social Security claims won’t be processed.

• Hundreds of thousands of federal employees would be furloughed and not paid; they’d eventually get back pay, unlike federal contractors, who may not.

• Cash-starved states would get no federal funds.

• Recruitment and testing of federal law enforcement officials would be suspended.
