One thing can certainly be said for the Republican Party: they don’t ever let a little thing like irony get in their way. In this case, we see former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, who appears to be preparing for a presidential campaign in 2012, coming out as the first top Republican to actually utter the word “impeachment” in regards to President Obama. The high crime of which Obama is allegedly guilty? His recent decision to direct the Department of Justice to cease legal defense of the Defense of Marriage Act.  Paul Bedard reports:

“I believe the House Republicans next week should pass a resolution instructing the president to enforce the law and to obey his own constitutional oath, and they should say if he fails to do so that they will zero out [defund] the office of attorney general and take other steps as necessary until the president agrees to do his job,” said Gingrich. “His job is to enforce the rule of law and for us to start replacing the rule of law with the rule of Obama is a very dangerous precedent.”

He didn’t call for immediate impeachment hearings, but didn’t rule them out if Obama balks at any congressional demands to enforce the law.

That’s right. The sanctity of heterosexual marriage has Newt Gingrich at its defense. The same Newt Gingrich who is currently on his third marriage. The same Newt Gingrich whose first two marriages both ended in divorce as the result of his affairs. The same Newt Gingrich who was Speaker of the House during the Clinton impeachment debacle over the Monica Lewinsky mess in 1998. And yes: the same Newt Gingrich who was himself having an extramarital affair during the same period.

Sometimes, you just can’t make this stuff up. Republicans are nothing if not masters of self-parody. This observer says let them go for it. After all, that government shutdown and impeachment thing worked out so well for them last time.
