Anti-Abortion New York Billboard: “The Most Dangerous Place For An African American Is In The Womb”

An anti-abortion group called Life Always put up a billboard in Manhattan near a Planned Parenthood office racializing the abortion issue. The sign shows a young black girl in a pink dress with the words, “The most dangerous place for an African American is in the womb.”

“This billboard simply doesn’t belong in New York City,” Bill de Blasio, the city’s public advocate, said in a statement. “The ad violates the values of New Yorkers and is grossly offensive to women and minorities.”

“A mix of intolerance and bad judgment put this ad up,” Mr. de Blasio added. “Common decency demands it be taken down.”

Stephen Broden of the Fair Park Bible Fellowship in Dallas, a founding board member of Life Always, who is black, says on the group’s website, “Our future is in jeopardy as a genocidal plot is carried out through abortion.”

Christine C. Quinn, the City Council speaker, harshly criticized the billboard, which is in the district she represents, and the comments from its supporters.

“To refer to a woman’s legal right to an abortion as a ‘genocidal plot’ is not only absurd, but it is offensive to women and to communities of color,” she said in a statement. “Every woman deserves the right to make health care decisions for herself, and I will continue to fight to protect this basic right and against this sort of fear mongering.”

Joan Malin, the president of Planned Parenthood of New York City, said she, too, found the billboard offensive, and was troubled that the group emphasized the high rates of abortion rather than “the high rates of unintended pregnancies.”

If these anti-abortion provocateurs care about children, let them, as City Council member Leticia James urges, “engage in some constructive activities, then urge an increase to funds for prenatal care, wages and child care.”
