Hawaii To Review Restaurant That Charges Mandatory Tips To Diners Who Don’t Speak English

The Hawaii Civil Rights Commission is looking at the legality of charging diners who don’t speak English mandatory tips.

The warning is in fine print on the menu at Keoni by Keo’s. The menu also says parties of six or more will be charged the same amount.

The Waikiki restaurant told KITV that its customer base includes many international travelers who, by custom, do not tip. The restaurant says it’s merely trying to help its customers and wait staff.

This gives the impression of xenophobia and Bill Hoshijo, who heads the Civil Rights Commission, says this is ancestry discrimination.  I’m curious how, if you don’t know the language, you can understand the directive in the first place.
