Michele Bachmann’s False Statements In Her Tea Party Response To The SOTU

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann gave inaccurate information, to be kind, during her response to the response to the State of the Union Address. She claimed that 16,500 IRS agents would be used to enforce the new health care law. According to factcheck.org, this is partisan hogwash.

Q: Will the IRS hire 16,500 new agents to enforce the health care law?

A: No. The law requires the IRS mostly to hand out tax credits, not collect penalties. The claim of 16,500 new agents stems from a partisan analysis based on guesswork and false assumptions, and compounded by outright misrepresentation.

Another Bachmann claim was that the Affordable Care Act would lead to a government takeover of health care.

In the end, unless we fully repeal ObamaCare, a nation that currently enjoys the world’s best healthcare may be forced to rely on government-run coverage that will have a devastating impact on our national debt for generations to come.

This is a constantly-repeated false refrain by those who oppose health care reform, and was the PolitiFact Lie of the Year in 2010. But, then, what do you expect from someone who believes John Quincy Adams was a founding father who, with our other founders,  ended slavery in their lifetimes?
