UPDATED: Tucson Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Shot In Head; In Serious Condition

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot along with eight others at a Tucson Safeway grocery store where a campaign event was to take place. Giffords, a Democrat, was to hold a “Congress on Your Corner” event at the establishment.

Giffords was shot in the head at point blank range. State Senator Linda Lopez is at University Medical Center in Tucson and says she spoke with  Giffords’ parents who say she is undergoing emergency surgery and is in very serious condition.

Earlier many media outlets reported Giffords had been killed.

At least four people are dead, University Medical Center spokesman Darci Slaten said. They were among five to seven people who were being treated.

The NBC affilliate in Tucson reports that the FBI has taken over the investigation.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that it is investigating a multiple shooting at a Safeway in northwest Tucson at Ina and Oracle roads.
