Thank You, Larry King

Larry King did his final daily CNN show Thursday night, with much deserved fanfare. When I was a late-night disc jockey in New York working for a radio station that was owned by Mutual, his then-radio network, I listened to his radio show in cue between playing country songs.  He set the standard for interviewing, knowing how to ask short, pithy questions, listen to the answers, and intuitively know what to ask next. I later got to meet and interview Larry, who was extremely kind to me and offered a helping hand when it really mattered.  Little did I know then that one day I’d be on cable news opposite Larry, a fierce competitor because of his ability to get great guests and ask good questions.  Knowing Larry, listening to him and, ultimately, doing a show opposite him, made me a better broadcaster.

The end of his reign as the king of talk on CNN is a significant marker. His show is a video history of our time, and Larry provided a comfort zone for guests and viewers alike.  So, thank you Larry, for what you’ve meant to me, personally, and to what you represent to our American culture.
