Republican Peter King Offers Eloquent Defense Of Democrat Charlie Rangel

Long Island’s conservative Peter King is one of the last people you’d expect to speak on behalf of a liberal Democrat, but King did just that in speaking out against the idea of censure for Congressman Rangel. Much of what has been revealed about Rangel was already public record so, asks King, “Where was the criminal intent?”

King made it clear they disagree “on virtually every issue.”  But King vouches for Rangel’s integrity and goodness. King says he’s studied myriad exhibits and correspondence, and that in the 220 year history of the House, only 22 members have been subject to censure, none in the last quarter century. The punishment was reserved for support for armed insurrection of the United States and sexual abuse of minors.

“I strongly believe the appropriate penalty is a reprimand…Let us apply the same standard of justice to Charlie Rangel that has been applied to everyone else and which all of us would want applied to ourselves,” urged King.
