GOP Wants Donor Secrecy; Democrats Call Them On It; GOP Attacks Democrats

Donors “lured with the promise of anonymity,” as the New York Times put it, are giving to Republicans in droves, safe from having their identities revealed. Millionaire businesspeople want to influence the election, but know that public disclosure that they’re supporting one side will hurt their images and businesses. Whatssa matter? Not proud of who they’re supporting?

Greg Sargent has it right: While former RNC Chair Ed Gillespie moans that the anonymity is driven by worry that Democrats are acting like big brother by working toward transparency, it’s the other way around. Democrats want transparency so voters know who is influencing elections, and these big Republican donors don’t want to be revealed.

This really isn’t complicated. The Chamber [of Commerce[, [Karl] Rove, Gillespie et al say it’s okay for our elections to be swayed by huge amounts of money coming from undisclosed sources. Dems say this is not okay. The foreign money talk is a diversion.
