Right Wing Upset That Obama Said, “We Can Absorb A Terrorist Attack” Even Though BushCo Said We Need That Capability

According to Bob Woodward’s new book, Obama’s Wars, President Obama told him, “We can absorb a terrorist attack. We’ll do everything we can to prevent it, but even a 9/11, even the biggest attack ever . . . we absorbed it and we are stronger.” This immediately drew criticism from the far right wing, with Liz Cheney calling this comment “alarming fatalism.”

“This comment suggests an alarming fatalism on the part of President Obama and his administration. Once again the President seems either unwilling or unable to do what it takes to keep this nation safe. The President owes the American people an explanation.”

It was her father’s White House, however, that put out a document warning that we must be able to absorb such an event:

We must now focus on the resilience of the system as a whole – an approach that centers on investments that make the system better able to absorb the impact of an event without losing the capacity to function.

When Dick Cheney, Condoleeza Rice and FBI Director Robert Mueller said in 2002 that we’d likely be hit again, drumming up fear, today’s Obama critics were silent.

VICE PRESIDENT DICK CHENEY: The prospect of another attack against the United States is very, very real. It’s just as real, in my opinion, as it was September 12.

TIM RUSSERT, NBC News: Not a matter of if, but when?

VICE PRESIDENT DICK CHENEY: Not a matter of if, but when.

And in 2004, Cheney equated a vote for John Kerry with an invitation to terrorists to attack the United States:

Cheney told Republican supporters at a town hall meeting in Des Moines that they needed to make “the right choice” in the November 2 election.

“If we make the wrong choice, then the danger is that we’ll get hit again — that we’ll be hit in a way that will be devastating from the standpoint of the United States,” Cheney said.

Let’s hear the people critical of Obama for saying we’re able to “absorb” an attack be equally critical of those who said that’s what we need to be able to do, and then fear mongered their way into a second term of office.
